Matt Mullenweg, der Gründer der Opensource-Weblogsoftware Wordpress, konnte für sein Unternehmen Automattic.com einige Investoren gewinnen. Die Geldgeber erwerben mit dem eingebrachten Kapital keinerlei Rechte an Wordpress, die populäre Software bleibt weiterhin unter der GPL lizensiert.
Matt Mullenweg ist Initiator einer der weltweit am meisten im Einsatz befindlichen Weblog-Systeme, Wordpress (Link: http://wordpress.org/). Später bot Matt unter wordpress.com einen Bloghosting-Service an und gründete Automattic.com (Link: http://automattic.com/), die verschiedene professionelle Dienste rund um Weblogs offeriert. Angesichts der dramatischen Zunahme an Kommentar- und Trackback-Spam, rief Mullenweg Akismet ins Leben, ein Unternehmen das professionellen Spamschutz für verschiedene Blog-Systeme anbietet.
